Rosie Batty asks fathers to challenge gender stereotypes on Father’s Day

This Father’s Day Australian of the Year Rosie Batty has asked Australians to think about how we can make simple changes in our lives to challenge the gender stereotypes and culture that contribute to family violence.

Ms Batty has asked fathers across Australia to complete a survey and help start a difficult conversation about family violence.

“This special day is about celebrating the hard work and love that fathers dedicate to their children and their families. But this year I’d like Australians to help make it about even more,” Ms Batty said.

“Evidence tells us that we need to challenge rigid gender stereotypes and gender inequality to prevent violence against women.

“What better day than Father’s Day to start to challenge these stereotypes and create a safer environment for our children.

“I know this is a difficult conversation. But that’s what we need if we are going to address family violence.

“We have compiled a short survey for fathers to help understand what things they can do to create a more just world, not constrained by stereotypes that can sometimes be harmful.

“This Father’s Day let’s acknowledge the great role that dads can play, and ask all fathers to help us end the family violence epidemic.  Please complete or share my Father’s Day survey.”
