A press conference with the PM

I’ve just come from a press conference with the Prime Minister. He called family violence in Australia a national disgrace.

I’ve just come from a press conference with the Prime Minister. He called family violence in Australia a national disgrace.

And then he announced a $100 million funding package to help address this epidemic. The package aims to improve frontline support and services, leverage innovative technologies to keep women safe, and provide education resources to help change community attitudes.

Significantly, for the work you have done with me, the announcement includes a commitment to introduce respectful relationship education in the curriculums of all Australian schools from Kindergarten to Year 10 by 2017.

I am so excited that we have been able to achieve this together. And I am pleased to see some strong leadership on family violence by the federal government.

But of course this is the beginning, not the end.

There is no silver bullet that will end the family violence epidemic. Today’s announcement is a big win for you as part of the Never Alone community and for every victim of family violence across Australia.

We need to keep going. Over the coming weeks you will be hearing more from me about some exciting new initiatives that I want you to back me up on.

People are starting to listen and act. Today we are another step closer to keeping women and children safe.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
